Add website analytics
Analytics tell you how many people visit your site and which pages they read. You set them up in Church info. They start counting after your next publish. All three tools are free, and all three are optional.
- Google Analytics shows the most detail. It sets a cookie.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits without a cookie. It is the gentler choice.
- Google Search Console is not a visitor counter. It shows how your site does in Google search. See Get found on Google.
You can use one, two or all three.
Add Google Analytics
Section titled “Add Google Analytics”- In Google Analytics, create a free account and a web data stream for your site’s address.
- Copy the Measurement ID. It starts with G-, like G-ABC1234567. You find it in Google Analytics under Admin, Data streams.
- In the builder, in the panel on the left, under Your website, click Church info.
- Under Google tools, paste it into Google Analytics Measurement ID.
- Click Save.
- Click Publish.
You see your numbers in Google Analytics, not in the builder.
Add the Search Console code
Section titled “Add the Search Console code”- In Google Search Console, add your site as a URL prefix property. Type your full site address, like https://gracechurch.projectgosites.com. A Domain property does not work for an address on projectgosites.com.
- Choose the HTML tag method. Google shows a line of code with content=“…” in it.
- Copy only the part inside the quote marks after content=.
- In the builder, open Church info.
- Under Google tools, paste it into Search Console verification code.
- Click Save.
- Click Publish. Wait about a minute.
- Back in Search Console, click Verify.
Add Cloudflare Web Analytics
Section titled “Add Cloudflare Web Analytics”- In your Cloudflare account, go to Analytics, Web Analytics, and add your site.
- Cloudflare shows a snippet of code. Copy the token from it. It is 32 letters and numbers.
- In the builder, open Church info.
- Under Visitor counting without cookies, paste it into Cloudflare Web Analytics token.
- Click Save.
- Click Publish.
Visitors whose browser sends Global Privacy Control, a “do not track me” setting, are not counted by either tool. So your numbers may be a little lower than your real visits. Your site shows no cookie banner.
To stop using a tool, clear its box in Church info, click Save, and publish.
If it does not work
Section titled “If it does not work”- “That is not a Measurement ID. It looks like G-ABC1234567 and you will find it in Google Analytics under Admin, Data streams.”: Copy the ID that starts with G-. If you pasted Google’s whole snippet, that is fine too: the builder finds the ID in it.
- “That is not a Search Console verification code. Paste only the content value from the HTML tag method.”: Paste only the letters and numbers inside the quote marks.
- “That is not a Cloudflare Web Analytics token. It is 32 letters and numbers, and you copy it from the site’s snippet in Cloudflare under Analytics, Web Analytics.”: Copy the token from the snippet, not your account ID.
- Search Console says it cannot verify the site: Publish first, then click Verify again. The code goes on your live site only when you publish.
- No visits show up: Publish after saving. Then visit your live site yourself and wait a day. Your own visits do not count if your browser sends Global Privacy Control.
- Publish says Google Analytics or Cloudflare Web Analytics is switched on and your Privacy Policy page is not live: Switch the Privacy Policy page back on in its Page settings, or clear the ID in Church info.
