Change a section background

A section’s background sets the mood of that band of the page. You can pick a color from your palette, put a photo behind the words, or loop a short video.

Pick a color

1. Open the page in the builder.
2. Point to the section. A small bar appears at its top right.
3. Click the paint drop button (Background). The Section background panel opens.
4. Click one of the three color swatches: light, shaded or dark. The section changes at once.
5. Click anywhere outside the panel to close it.

The three colors come from your palette, so every choice matches your site. To change the palette for the whole site, see Change your colors.

Add or change a background photo

1. Open the Section background panel.
2. Click Add a photo…. If the section has a photo already, click Change the photo….
3. Choose a photo from your computer or phone, or from Site images. Then click Apply.

The color you picked becomes a see-through tint over the photo, so the words stay easy to read. To slide the photo into place, see Move a photo to frame it. For photo sizes and file types, see Photo files that work.

To take the photo off, open the panel and click Remove photo. The background goes back to a solid color.

Add a background video

A background video plays silently on a loop behind the section.

1. Open the Section background panel of a section with no photo.
2. Click Video background…. The Background video window opens.
3. In Video link, paste a direct link to an .mp4 or .webm video file. The link must end in .mp4 or .webm.
4. Click Use this video.

To change it, open the panel and click Change the video…. To take it off, click Remove video.

Caution

A YouTube link does not play behind a section. You see its still picture only while you edit. In Preview and on your live site, the section shows its color instead. For a video visitors press play on, use a video section. See Add a video.

The builder does not store video files. Your .mp4 or .webm file must already be on the web, at a link that opens the file itself.

Go back to the template’s background

Open the panel and click Template default. The section’s background goes back to how the template had it. Your words stay.

Your changes are on your live site after you publish. See Publish your site.

On a phone

The section buttons always show at the top right of each section. Tap the paint drop button. To frame a background photo, use the four arrow buttons in the panel.

If it does not work

• “Paste a YouTube link, or a direct link to an .mp4 or .webm file.”: The link is not a video file. Copy the link that opens the video file itself.
• “A Vimeo video or a YouTube playlist has no still picture to show behind a section. …”: Use a direct .mp4 or .webm link instead.
• You do not see Video background…: The section has a photo. Click Remove photo first.
• The video does not move on your live site: It is a YouTube link. Use a direct .mp4 or .webm link.
