Help a page show up on Google

Each page has its own search settings. They decide what Google shows for the page, and what people see when they share it on Facebook or in a text. Clear words here help the right people find you.

  1. In the panel on the left, under Pages, point to the page. A gear appears beside it.
  2. Click the gear. Page settings opens. Find SEO (search engine optimization).
  3. In Focus keyphrase, type the main words people would search to find this page, like Bible classes in Dothan. This is a note for you. It does not change the page by itself, so use the same words in the boxes below and on the page.
  4. In SEO title, type the headline for Google and social shares. Left blank, the page title and your church name are used.
  5. In Meta description, write one or two sentences about the page. The counter under the box turns green between 120 and 156 characters. Left blank, the builder writes one from the page name and your Church info.
  6. Under Featured image, click Choose image and pick a photo. It shows when someone shares the page on social media. Google may use it too. Left blank, the first large photo on the page is used.
  7. Look at Google preview and Social preview. They show roughly what people will see.
  8. Click Save.
  9. Click Publish. See Publish your site.

The Slug box in the same window sets the page’s address. See Rename a page or change its address.

The homepage is where visitors land first, at your main address.

  1. Open the Page settings of the page you want as your homepage.
  2. Click Make this the homepage. The builder says the page is now your homepage.
  3. Click Publish.

The page is switched on, if it was off. If it was on your live site, its old address forwards to the homepage. The page that was the homepage goes back to its own address.

Your homepage is always published. You cannot switch it off or delete it. Its window says This is your homepage.

Google finds a new site faster when you tell it about your site. See Get found on Google.

  • Google still shows the old title or summary: Google reads your site again on its own schedule. It can take days or weeks. Check that you published after you saved.
  • The counter is red: Your Meta description is longer than 156 characters. Google cuts off the end. Make it shorter.
  • A shared link shows the wrong picture: Choose a Featured image for that page, then publish. Facebook may keep the old picture for a while.
